It took me 34 years to stop overthinking and just f*cking do it.
Here's how to stop overthinking yourself in 2 minutes.
Step one: The thing you’re afraid of isn’t actually the problem.
In almost all situations where someone overthinks, it’s because they’re worried about their decision leading to the wrong outcome. They’re scared of looking silly, of people thinking negatively of them. And so they create this catastrophised version of reality in their head, and let that dictate their actions.
Let me tell you, 99% of the things you’re worrying about won’t actually happen. And even if they did, how many ‘bad’ days have you come back from? How many rejected interviews or dates have you recovered from? 100% of them. You need to acknowledge that your imagination is an incredible place, but it’s also a dramatic place. Tell it to pipe down.
Step two: Stop talking yourself into mediocrity.
So I have this thing where I believe, absolutely and genuinely that everything is going to work out. I believe my business is going to thrive, I believe I will get the house I want myself and my kids to ‘grow up’ in, I believe I will meet the love of my life. I believe that no matter WHAT I do, that those things will happen and so my risk appetite is high because I believe it will work out - and it’s taking those risks that lead me to an extraordinary life.
Every single opportunity you don’t apply for, or every interview you don’t accept, every piece of content you talk yourself out of posting and every person you convince yourself is out of your league, you’re talking yourself into staying average. F*ck mediocrity.
Step three: Follow the 5-second rule.
If you don’t know who Mel Robbins is, google her. In her TED Talk, The 5 Second Rule, she explains how you can stop screwing your life over by just counting down form 5 and acting on the thing you need to act on when you reach 1.
I practice this mostly when my alarm goes off at 5.30am, or when I take an ice bath after a workout... but the rule works in real life exceptionally well.
Overthinking is the art of creating new problems out of ones that barely existed in the first place. The truth is, most problems aren’t solved by more thinking - they’re solved by doing. You can’t think your way to an incredible future, or into ‘fixing’ your past.
- Accept that life sucks sometimes.
- Accept that you’ll have to make shtty decisions.
- Accept sometimes those decisions will be the wrong ones.
- Accept that you can’t control outcomes, but you can control your thoughts and your actions.
Stop letting them control you... and just f*cking do it.
In my opinion.
